I worked at the lease last weekend by taking down a few trees that were obsrtucting a clear view from the tripod deer stand we moved a couple of months ago. A fair-sized tree blew down from the heavy storms we had last week and it obstructed the path to the cabin.  I cut it into what will be useable firewood come next spring.

I also checked around at the places I usually see the most turkey sign.  I found a lot of feathers from birds near one sandy ridge that dust bowls are usually located on.  The landowner bush-hogged the powerlines and roads around the property. It is looking pretty good.  I also found a big gobbler track in a low spot on a two track about 100 yards from our most productive blind.  The time before last when I was out there, I dug a shallow depression into of a pile of soil that had been pushed up when the land was cleared over 20 years ago.  It should offer a better shot to where the powerlines and the roadbed make a junction, which is too far from  the blind we currently use.  It is not a pit blind, but I cut down just below the crest of the rise to make it where your legs & feet will fit comfortably below the level of your butt.  Before, your knees would be in your face and it would in no way be comfortable. We'll see how it does.

I saw no birds, but plenty of sign...though not too much from poults.  I'll probably have to go out and watch from one of the stands for any activity. No Fall hunting here, but the Spring season gets closer every day.  It is worth working for.

Jim

I fed the chiggers at the lease yesterday.  Even with bug juice on I managed to get about 35 to 40 of the little buggers on me.

I walked some of the roads on the property and the boundary line with my magnum loppers.  I cut branches as I went so they will be less of a problem Fall & Spring.  I also realized that I have lots more of the same to do.

We will be having a meeting of the minds to see how many food plots will be going in this summer.  We won't plant until the end of August so the heat & low rainfall doesn't wipe them out before they get started good. I expect clover is all we'll do this time.

I found a new area of dust bowls and many feathers around them.  I also found a smallish wing primary feather up near what is usually a traditional strut zone. There are a few more trees that recent storms brought down that need to be cut & moved, but I didn't have my chainsaw with me yesterday.

Every bit I do now will be less to do later.

Jim

I'll tell ya what you need to do with those bug bites. Get some clear fingernail polish and scratch the bite where it's open and then put the polish on it and let it dry. it will smother those chigars and it won't itch .

I'm going in the morning to do a little bush hogging and work up some ground for a couple of small food plots that we are going to put in for the fall. I also have to do a little bit of tree clean up still, after some of our trees got their leaves on the limbs have layed over in the road. All the trees in the area are very weak from the ice storm we had earlier. Also have to check my trail cameras, hopeing that there are some pics of some bucks this time, still havent gotten any pics of turkeys yet either.

Hope to stay away from the bugs and snakes, buddy of mine killed a 49" rattler yesterday.

Hey Ken  I'll bet you wear the bright orange during deer season.Maybe a splash of green and brown in with it. You know you gotta make everything match  when you are hunting. I'am still working on Mark  he just don't get this fashon thing at all.

The number of chiggers that attacked me was not fully realized until I could start counting the red dots all over.  Best I can tell, I have around 70 chigger bites...well short of my personal record of 176 at once, but aggravating none the less. It is hard to imagine that a bite from those tiny little creatures causes so much discomfort for so long.  My wife turned me on to a lotion called Sarna, that is available over the counter at the pharmacy.  It helps reduce itching enough where I fall asleep easily.  I can't imagine life without it.

It will be a couple of weeks before I go back out there to work, but you'd best believe that I will be wearing my knee-high rubber boots and more 100% DEET than necessary.

I got no choice when making improvements & maintaining the lease. It will be worth the discomfort in time.  About the time I see that gobbler well enough to get a good shot, or have eased back to near his roost quietly (because the limbs and low underbrush are out of the path), I will have long forgotten what it took to make that happen.  A little investment in time ( & some suffering) now will pay dividends during the hunting season.

Plus, it is against my nature to stay out of the woods & weeds.

Well i guess you better toughen up cause those chiggers are going to get you. I can't keep Mark out of the woods either i think he spends most of his time there. If i didn't know better i would say he has a woman out there. i don't have time to get out in the woods but i do like walking in the woods ( with Mark of course) . Every once in a while i take a walk through the neighbors field and back to the woods and just sit on a log or stump. Listening to all the sounds and watching the deer. I usaully take my dog with me he don't like me being out of his sight.

I spent the better part of yesterday working at the lease & managed not to get the first tick or chigger!  I found 11 turkey feathers in one area where they like to roost.  I guess they still like it. One section of woods was absolutely shredded, I'm not sure what they were feeding on, but whatever it was, they wanted it bad.

My main reason for goping out there was to clear limbs & branches off the roads so we can get around during deer season.  I also cut down some small trees and moved some branches that had been left from logging to make a trail to a new tree to hunt deer out of.  I also plan to hunt turkeys from the brush pile I created.  The pond looked inviting, but my fishing stuff did not come with me this trip.  I didn't see many turkey tracks, but I didn't get close to the areas they usually like to hang out in (except for where I found the feathers) and it rained pretty good a few days ago. The cutover area is growing up like a jungle and should be difficult to see over by next fall. Things are lookin'good!

evening!
I'm sittin here getting jealous of all this talk about "workin the lease". It's a dream of mine to have a little bit of property to call my own and turn into a place for turkey and deer to come and hang out. Please keep this thread going and let us know how things are progressing! As for the chiggers....can't help ya, never been bit by one. As a side point, I am truelly sorry for you not having a "second season". That would kill me! If you ever need to get away in the fall and your in my neck of the world, please drop on by and we'll chase them birds together.

I'll never say never about getting out to your part of the world. I always wanted to turkey hunt there.

Chiggers are not worth having. Thankfully, they are gone until late Spring.  I don't hate much, but chiggers make it in the top 5 of my list. Ticks & mosquitos are a close second.

I wish I could say that the land I primarily hunt was mine, but it does belong to a very good friend who lets us hunt in exchange for helping him keep it up.  We also fund whatever food plots that get planted, plus and new construction material & labor.  It is worth it to know who else is hunting around you AND that they can be trusted to hunt safely.

Evening Jim
I hear ya about your hunting ground. My buddy that got me into hunting has good land that only he and I are allowed to hunt. It's nice to be able to hunt whatever and not have to worry about any other people that you may or may not be able to trust.
