to my 9 year old nephew (who I am trying to get interested in hunting)  why a "hunter" on a nationally syndicated TV show was marking his shotgun barrel with a Sharpie every time he (and his buddy) killed a turkey………….54, 55, 56, 57……..59 (in a single 30 minute show).   “Whats so hard about that Uncle Murray”.   “You told me turkey hunting is hard”.  I got to thinking how foolish that must look to someone who doesn’t turkey hunt (like my nephew).  Thanks “TV hunting” for making our (parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents) jobs harder than it already is………..

Tell him that TV is not reality and that it is edited to cut out the unsuccessful hunts. Make sure you take him to watch turkeys so he can see how difficult it is to get them in range.

Jim

I know what you mean. I've been taking a friends kid shooting and he's starting to take an interest in hunting. The only hunting he's seen is on TV and he thinks it's rather easy. There are a few old books I am going to try and have him read. One in particular I read when I was 12 and it really got me into turkey hunting, 18 years later I'm still crazy about it and I still read that book. I think if we take the time to show these kids the total turkey expirience, hunting, calling, calls, etc, there is a good chance they will get an idea of what it's all about.

Try to compare it to something they already know. Real hunting to TV hunting is like a drive to the store is to NASCAR. Ask him if knows the differance and see what he comes up with after he thinks about it for a while? Sometimes it's easier to work with them at their level, then it is to try to make them understand at our level.

Well fellas this is just my opinion i have three boys and they all but one hunt.Mark had to help them as well. And what they would do is sit around and listen to the older guys talk when they were young.Mark talked and explained things to them while they watched the hunting videos together. My youngest boy was only 14 yrs.old when Mark and i got together .Mark was always talking about hunting and when other guys came around that Mark hunted with the boys were all ears.
Your nephew just needs to be there with you more and listen to the storys and comments and maybe even watch some videos with him. My boys learned alot from Mark and they still ask questions time to time and listen to older hunters tales . They just need to be around someone with experience and if  they get ideas on their own and it's not right you have to tell them. Mark was really good for my boys and they really love him for what hes done. I thought that he was a little rough on them when he would get on them about hunting and being safe but Mark don't sugar coat anything. He tells them how it is and how to be successful and safe at the same time.

Oddly enough I have known some ADULTS who took an interest in turkey hunting after watching a couple of shows and though it would be easy too. I explained to them that most times the birds don't just come running to a call. I think it's great to be able to watch hunts on T.V. But it does paint an unrealistic picture to some (exspeacially children), As to how easy turkeys are to hunt.

I have a large collection of DVD's and videos and some do show boogerd hunts which I think is important. H.S.Strut videos will show some misses and birds that just scare off for one reason or another. Afterwards they follow up with the hunter not giving up and moving on to another bird or working another stratagy. Which is good to show kids I feel. I know alot of the shows on T.V. will only show one takedown after another to have exciting content in the alotted time slot. Maybe get a couple of videos that have a more realistic approuch. Also let your Nephew understand that the birds hunted on the T.V. are most likely on privete ground with feeders, not public land that most of us in the real world venture off to.

Good luck!
