Da' gummit ! I was afraid somebody would ask ?

I have been at as hard as I can go . Covered more hills and hollers than whole of the westward migration of the 1800's.
One afternoon last week I slipped into a known hang out those bearded jehu's . I went in like an Indian. No , not in breechclout and moccasins,,,I mean quiet. Around 100 yards into the cedars I stopped and calmed down and listened a bit . Then I let out this noise that was supposed to be a gobbler cluck and one clucked back . I 'bout fell down , but managed to be still and wait a moment , then clucked again . I got a second responce and somewhat closer . I began easing the 410 to my shoulder . He never answered nor showed .I believe he was in a shallow run off gulley when he made his last cluck which made him sound farther away to me . At any rate , I was evidently caught in the act of trying to shoulder that dangerous sportin' arm,,,,,,,,,,or he fell down laughin' at the size of its muzzle.
Yesterday around 3:00 I got into a conversation with a hen. It was my first action with any length of time to it . But when I threw in a gobbler yelp she went silent and then 3-5 minutes later I see her and one other bird fly up into some oaks,,,,2 hours before sundown . I wasn't gonna shoot her , i was just trying to get some action started and maybe pull in a tom .

If I keep going at this rate , with no success , I will for sure cover every acre of that hunting area and some private land too.
To make matters worse ,,That feller I took on opening day last spring , REDLINE, went down to the hunting area yesterday morning just to walk around and look up the deer sign . He rounds a corner in a field and there 15 yards in front is 9 turkeys , two of which where longbeards . And now this time change just about ruins any chance of an evening hunt.

We have 4 more weekends to find that longbeard willing to play the game .

I didn't get a bird , but I had 8 great weekends , as well as several evenings in the woods . Most of the season was in some of the finest fall weather one could want .
Early in the season it was as if the birds were extinct . Then as time went on things began to turn around . Enjoyed several engagements . The one gobbler I pulled in came in alone , about 2 hours after the first gobble , and maybe 15 minutes after the last . He never made a sound , other than his feet crushing the leaves under his steps . He was a beaut of a bird . Not an ol' timer but very handsome nonetheless . He stood on that little bank knoll looking right at my setup. I judged it too far for a clean shot with the 410 , so I let him go about his business . His business took him around me and up to the top of the ridge where another tom came to fight him . Heck of a show .
I used all of my calls , as well as Linda's slate 'n' peg she received from Ken . The Wilson is so sweet sounding out in the timber , and I had several engagements that began with that box. Made lots of gobbles on a Steve Kinder mouthcall , with varied responces . I did not hear any gobbles this fall . But did get to hear gobbler cutts , yelps ,purring , aggressive purrs , fights , tree calls , clucks , big wings ,and big feet,,,,oh yeah ,,,and poop hit my new cap,,,,and one I had never heard before which I would not be able to describe , other than it fluxuated up and down.
I enjoyed every outing , and have no complaints , except with my own personal skills .
I looked into many new hollers and covered many miles alone , yet never lonely .
Found places where it looked as if that gang of gobblers all stood in a tight group on a small knoll and they all left their trademark on the ground there. Actually I found several of these knolls in the cedar slopes , covered in gobbler poop. Most of which was an area about 20-25 feet in diameter.

I could go on and on but I need to get off here .
I hope you have a great season Randy ,,,and all that are able to hunt the fall turkey.

I left work with the intention of getting home ,,,changing clothes ,,,grabbin' my slug gun and walking across the road into a small thicket . But with only an hour and a few minutes of hunting time I declined . Though it is likely I would have at the very least seen a deer there this evening. The place is a magnet for deer on breezy days . And , they can get in and out by several avenues if needed . I guess I'll wait till this weekend .
