Good way to start Dan! Your little girl looks delighted too. Horses cheaper?!? Not in my world. My wife is an equestrian eventer who shows in 5 states in the region. Let me give you a bit of a breakdown. 1. Initial cost of the horse. 2. Getting the horse Vet checked. 3. Stabling & Feed 4. Buying saddles (jumping & dressage) 5. Getting reins, bits, stirrups, and assorted steering gear. 6. Saddle pads. 7. Blankets, sheets, and raincoat (cold rain is awful on any mamal). 8. Lessons weekly x2 (jumping & dressage). 9. New shoes every 4 weeks. 10. Vet bills for when he hurts himself playing around in the pasture with other horses, or if he gets injured in competition. 11. Nutritional suppliments. 12. A truck & trailer to get horse to & from lessons and shows. 13. Entry fees to shows. 14. Gas for vehicle to get to & from shows & lessons (an F250 gets thirsty pulling a heavy trailer). 15. Hotel/ Motel fees OR the cost of a living quarters trailer (a camper & horse trailer built together). And on, & on. You get the idea. My wife rode as a child and drifted away from it. I suggested she try it again when she was minding my business more than I was. It may be the smartest thing I ever did and it may also be the dumbest. Two of her horses have won "Horse of the Year" for their level here in N.C.. But the payback is minimal. She is pretty consistently ranked in the National charts, but is a long way from the Olympics (or anything close, really). Jim
